Shell LiveWIRE 2024 Final Pitch Day: Empowering Tech Startups to Shape the Future of Energy Solutions
Innovative Filipino Startups Showcase Sustainable Solutions at Shell LiveWIRE 2024
Manila, Philippines – Imagine buildings that stay cool without air-conditioning, waste converted into clean fuel, and electricity generated from ocean tides – these are the groundbreaking solutions presented by Filipino tech startups at the recent Shell LiveWIRE 2024 Final Pitch Day hosted by Shell Pilipinas Corporation (SPC).
Shell LiveWIRE, a global entrepreneurship program of Shell, has been empowering Filipino entrepreneurs for five years. Launched in 1982 in Scotland, Shell LiveWIRE has grown into a global program supporting innovative businesses. Focused on energy solutions, value chain integration, and economic diversification, Shell LiveWIRE Philippines strengthens local economies through mentorship, funding, and access to Shell’s network. The program empowers startups aligned with Shell's mission of providing more and cleaner energy solutions.
Since its inception in 2020, Shell LiveWIRE in the Philippines has supported 75 tech start-ups and community enterprises through mentorship and a total of 15 million pesos in capital funding, helping businesses grow, scale their impact, and create sustainable livelihoods. 14 of these enterprises have been integrated in the Shell supply chain.
Lorelie Quiambao-Osial, SPC President and Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the energy company’s continued commitment to empowering Filipino startups and to further energy transition. “Our theme this year is “Kasabay sa Pag-unlad” and this is the first year when we focused the programon energy transition – it is something that is very important for us in Shell as we power progress together with the Filipino.”
This year’s top three finalists—GAIA Builders and Trading Corporation, Green Solution.PH, and SALTRIC—showcased their cutting-edge innovations before a panel of industry experts and potential investors, aiming to secure funding and support from SPC.
Green Solution.PH emerged as the grand winner, getting Php 1M funding from the Shell LiveWire program for its zero-carbon-emission waste-to-energy solution that converts landfill waste into biodiesel, bunker fuel, and electricity using a pyrolysis system. Their process addresses the dual issues of waste management and energy production, creating sustainable energy solutions while reducing fuel costs. Their innovation holds the potential to support Shell’s decarbonization and green energy initiatives.
Championing Sustainable Innovation: Serge Bernal, VP Corporate Relations at Shell Pilipinas Corporation, Engr. Ian Fred Solas of Green Solution PH, and Sebastian Quinones, Jr., Executive Director of Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc., celebrate the success of Green Solution PH as the grand winner of Shell LiveWIRE 2024, highlighting the importance of sustainable energy solutions in driving the future of clean energy.The 2 other finalists GAIA Builders and Trading Corporation and SALTRIC also received funding support of Php 500,000 each from the Shell LiveWire program.
GAIA Builders and Trading Corporation presented its passive cooling building solutions designed to reduce the energy consumption of buildings by managing thermal performance. Their flagship service, the CoolRoof Program, uses geo-engineering technology to block solar heat, resulting in up to 60% energy reduction for air-conditioned buildings.
SALTRIC, showcased its Marissa Turbines, a vertical-axis hydroelectric turbine designed to harness energy from ocean tides and river streams. Their solution offers a zero-emission, sustainable energy source that aim’s to contribute to the country’s clean energy transition.
Additionally, CP Health Innovations, a participant in the Shell LiveWIRE Acceleration Program, was given a special recognition for its commitment to sustainable growth and innovation through the Benita and Catalino Yap Foundation (BCYF) Award Enterprises initiative. This collaboration has provided CP Health Innovations with the mentorship and resources needed to advance its mission of promoting health and well-being in communities.
The event not only spotlighted tech startups but also recognized community enterprises from across the Philippines that participated in Shell LiveWIRE’s Acceleration Program. Among them were GLF Agriculture Cooperative from Tarlac, which focuses on farm-to-market solutions and farmer training, led by Michelle del Pilar; Rooted Beginnings: Barangay Calumpang Farmer's Association, Inc. from Pampanga, specializing in farm seedlings, represented by Ritchie Basa; Silent Beads from Quezon City, which produces plantable paper products, headed by Monnick Cruz; and DeWaste Solutions from Cavite, innovating in waste management and bio-digesters, led by Juvien Galano. Arka Inc. from Cebu, connecting farming communities to markets, was represented by Neil Clyde Kho, while Dingras Empanada from Cavite, known for its innovative empanadas, was led by Jay Eronico. Finally, STYLE ISLE from Baguio City, which creates fashion and accessories in partnership with local communities, was spearheaded by Twinkle Ferraren. These enterprises, along with the tech startups, benefited from expert mentorship and gained access to Shell’s value chain, equipping them with the resources to scale their businesses and make a meaningful impact on the local economy and communities.
