Post ReleaseEmpower Over 100 Certified Energy Managers
PLDT and Smart enhance energy efficiency efforts with over 100 newly certified energy managers to support sustainability and compliance.
PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) now have over 100 Certified Energy Managers (CEM) comprised of their network operations and facilities management personnel, reinforcing their commitment to operational resource efficiency and compliance with environmental management regulations.
This certification initiative was undertaken with the Meralco Power Academy and reinforces the Group’s continuing adherence to the Department of Energy (DOE) Circular No. DC 2023-12-0036, which mandates that Designated Establishments (DE) consuming at least 50,001 kWh annually to implement an Energy Management System (EMS) and submit regular energy reports.
PLDT and Smart have identified over 1,000 sites meeting the DOE's energy consumption threshold, as of end-December 2024. To strengthen compliance with the DOE Circular, the Group prepared its network and facilities management teams for CEM training and certification, equipping them with the skills needed to manage and optimize energy use across operations.
“With Certified Energy Managers among our teams, we aim to enhance our organizational capacity to use energy resources more efficiently and support our decarbonization roadmap”, said Benjamin Cusi, Energy Head at PLDT and Smart. “Our CEMs will enable us to implement smarter and data-driven practices that reduce energy consumption and contribute to our broader sustainability goals.”
“The certification process and DOE accreditation underscores our commitment to embedding energy efficiency into the core of our facilities management operations,” said Leo A. Gonzales, VP and Head of Property Facilities and Asset Resiliency Management. “By equipping our teams with the expertise to optimize energy use, we are driving operational efficiency and cost management while contributing to our sustainability agenda and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory standards.”
The PLDT Group follows a decarbonization roadmap that aims to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, coming from a 2019 baseline. With this CEM certification and parallel efforts to transition to renewable energy use, adopt green technologies, and uphold energy efficiency practices, PLDT and Smart aim to be in a better position to comply with the DOE’s requirements and support goals of the Paris Agreement to achieve Net Zero by 2050.
