Post ReleaseStrengthen waste management efforts
A forum marked the successful conclusion of JICA’s waste management project in Davao, highlighting key achievements and future sustainability plans.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the local government of Davao City, in partnership with Kitakyushu City in Japan, and the Kitakyushu City Environmental Preservation Association (KEPA) held a momentous forum to mark the culmination of the Project for the Improvement of Municipal Solid Waste Management (SWM) System in Davao City, February 12, 2025.
The forum, which was attended by various stakeholders including key city officials, barangay leaders, and community representatives, presented the achievements and progress made by the JICA grassroots project, “The Project for Improvement of Municipal Solid Waste Management (SWM) System in the City of Davao” over the past three years, as well as its social and environmental gains for the city. Said project is a collaboration among JICA and Davao City, with the support of the Kitakyushu City and KEPA. It has played a crucial role in enhancing waste segregation, collection, and recycling mechanisms in the city. These developments are obviously essential for the propagation of proper SWM practices, mitigation of environmental pollution, and creation of livable and sustainable circumstances in the city, as a model of a circular economy as well.
The topics in the forum included an overview of the project, a presentation of the practical activities conducted in the project area, and discussions on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), Materials Recovery Systems (MRS), and composting. Community representatives and school implementers also shared their experiences and initiatives in integrating solid waste management education into their curriculum. During the closing session, the stakeholders outlined the plans for extending the project's benefits beyond the pilot project area, ensuring that the lessons and best practices are institutionalized for sustainability.
The forum also highlighted the impact of the training sessions conducted in Kitakyushu City in Japan, where representatives from Davao City could learn best practices in solid waste management. With the knowledge and insights they gained, Davao City is poised to sustain and further develop its SWM initiatives.
In his message, JICA Philippines Senior Representative IDE Soichiro commended and encouraged all the people and organizations that are making their efforts to create a better environment. “This milestone is a testament to our successful partnership – among JICA, Kitakyushu City, KEPA, and Davao City. I encourage that you will continue and sustain our efforts in improving your solid waste management system. May it inspire others to work together towards eradicating marine litter pollution, adopting circular economy, championing clean cities, and achieving sustainable development.”
City Administrator Atty. Francis Mark Layog and Mr. ISHIKAWA Yoshihisa, Consul General of Japan in Davao, were also present among many esteemed guests who graced the forum.
