Post ReleaseA Truly Friendly Start to My TEFL Journey
From the moment I contacted, the team at this boutique TEFL provider in Ireland, I felt right at home. Their warm reception and personal approach set the tone for an outstanding learning journey—one that’s as supportive as it is professional.
Philippines - June 09, 2025 - My Journey with the TEFL Institute of Ireland and Chongqing
When I first considered teaching English abroad, I was nervous but excited. After hours of searching, I nearly chose Premier TEFL, but something was telling me to try The TEFL Institute of Ireland. It immediately caught my attention with its friendly, welcoming vibe. From my very first email, the staff made me feel at home, as if I were joining a supportive family, not just enrolling in a course. That warmth made all the difference.
I chose the 180-hour Level 5 TEFL Diploma, which is recognized worldwide and gives you a real edge in the job market. The course covered everything from lesson planning to classroom management, and I could study at my own pace online. But what truly set this experience apart was the one-to-one mentorship. My mentor was always available to answer my questions, review my work, and assist me in preparing for interviews. I remember being so anxious about the application process, but with their guidance, I felt ready and confident.
After finishing the course, the careers team helped me find a fantastic teaching position in Chongqing, China. The school is small, but it’s bursting with heart and energy. The students are eager to learn, and the staff are incredibly supportive. Every day, I’m reminded why I chose this path—seeing my students grow and knowing I’m making a difference is incredibly rewarding.
Chongqing itself is a vibrant, lively city, full of friendly people and fantastic food. Teaching here has given me the chance to experience a new culture and make lifelong friends. I’ve learned a great deal about myself and the world.
One of my favourite memories is from a lesson where I talked about my travels and mentioned a visit to the Philippines. The kids were fascinated, especially when I told them about a girl named Mayumi from the town of Vigan, a beautiful old Spanish colonial city known for its cobblestone streets and friendly locals. I explained that Mayumi means “tender” or “gentle” in Filipino, and the students loved learning about names from different cultures. It was a simple moment, but it reminded me of how much we can learn from one another, regardless of our origins.
Looking back, I’m so glad I chose the TEFL Institute of Ireland. The Level 5 Diploma provided me with the skills and confidence I needed, and the mentorship and career support ensured I landed in a great school. Teaching in Chongqing, in a place with a “hell of a heart,” has been an unforgettable experience. If you’re considering teaching English abroad, I can’t recommend this journey enough; it’s challenging, rewarding, and full of heart, just like the people you’ll meet along the way.
