Children’s health, well-being and learning recovery at risk due to Mayon volcano unrest – UNICEF

MANILA, 9 June 2023 – PHIVOLCS raised the status of Mayon volcano to alert level 3 on Thursday (8 June) with a warning of a potential hazardous eruption in the coming days or weeks. Families residing within the 6-kilometer radius permanent danger zone in Albay are being evacuated.

UNICEF is closely monitoring the situation of families and children affected and remains ready to respond when called upon by the Philippine Government.

Children are among the most vulnerable in emergencies such as volcanic eruptions. They are at high risk of respiratory problems, malnutrition, and dangerous diseases.

Children who had to flee their homes for safety are likely to experience psychosocial stress. Staying in evacuation centers may also expose them to neglect, abuse and exploitation. Schools are often used as evacuation sites before, during and after emergency strikes, disrupting children's learning due to the consequential suspension of classes.

UNICEF has strategically positioned emergency supplies to cater to the requirements of more than 10,000 families affected by the crisis. These supplies encompass a range of essential provisions, such as tents, educational resources for emergencies, hygiene kits promoting family well-being and dignity, water purification tablets, and ready-to-use therapeutic food, among other items. UNICEF stands prepared to swiftly deploy these supplies and collaborate with partners to ensure their immediate distribution as needed.
